Simple is better?

I’ve been playing with the Jack the Ripper Vanguard Cube since October. It’s been a lot of fun, but tough to fit in, especially around events like Standard Showdown. If we only have 2 or 3 hours, it’s tough to draft and explain the rules, since most people don’t know Vanguard. I love Commander Cubes but they are a huge time suck, but they are easier in a way since most people know Commander.

I had started playing around with ideas for a Cube based on “A Visit from St. Nicholas” but suddenly it was mid-December, so I shelved that idea.

For the last six months, at least, I’ve been toying with the idea of a Tarot based Cube. I want it to be really complex, a Commander cube of sorts, but with the Commanders aligning with the Major Arcana. You’d draw three cards and get a mini-reading. But I don’t know how to make that work in a practical sense. Again, time suck.

Since most of my Cubes rely on commons, I just like having a special element, you know?

Anyway, I’ve done the first draft of my next Cube, a food-based Cube. I originally wanted to make it something like Cutthroat Kitchen with sabotages and such. But for now I’m just going with a regular draft. My color balance is way off, though, so I’m on my second pass and trying to decide if I want to add an element. (For example, “If music be the food of love, play on” and it’s a food and music/song Cube.)

It feels weird to focus on something simple, but something you can actually play is better than nothing!
